ACLU Meeting & Program: Aimee Welch, an active community volunteer & worker in health and human services for the past 12 years, will talk about YES on I-1000, the Death with Dignity Initiative, sponsored by former Gov. Booth Gardner. There will be a Q&A session after the talk. The general public is welcome.

"It's My Decision" and "Yes on 1000," Washington groups that advocate the right of terminally ill patients to end their lives with dignity, are pursuing a ballot initiative to give these patients access to life-ending medicines. The initiative would give mentally competent, terminally ill adults, with six months or fewer to live, legal access to life-ending medicines. Physicians will not administer these medicines, but will be allowed to prescribe them and to counsel patients who seek them. The Death with Dignity initiative includes many safeguards and replicates the Oregon law, which has now been in effect for more than ten years. It has been tested in practice and in our courts -- all the way to the United States Supreme Court. It is time to give Washington’s terminally ill patients a choice in their end-of-life decisions. The ACLU is supporting the effort to place this initiative on the fall 2008 ballot.

Please think about how you can help with the ACLU booth at the summer fairs and festivals.

There is good bus service to the Library and ample on-street parking at the Library.
