LOCAL NEWS: Jeff Halper in Tacoma -- Tues., Oct. 7 @ 7pm

Jeff Halper, the internationally known activist who was nominated in 2006 by the American Friends Service Committee for the Nobel Peace
Prize, is making his first-ever appearance in Tacoma on the evening of Tues., Oct. 7, at 7:00 p.m., on the campus of the University of Puget
Sound.[1]  --  He is just back from harrowing and inspiring experiences with the Free Gaza Movement, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Gaza_Movement) about which he will make a report.  --  Jeff Halper is the 59-year-old co-founder of the
Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions. (ICAHD)(http://www.icahd.org/eng/)  --  Please help notify others of this unusual event, which has been organized on short notice but that represents a rare opportunity to encounter an extraordinary human being.

WHAT:  AN EVENING WITH DR. JEFF HALPER
WHO:  Jeff Halper, co-founder of ICAHD and AFSC nominee for the Nobel
Peace Prize
WHEN:  Tuesday, October 7, 2008 -- 7:00 p.m.
WHERE:  Trimble Forum, Trimble Hall, University of Puget Sound campus,
1500 N. Warner St., Tacoma (left of the Wheelock Student Center)

Dr. Jeff Halper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Halper) has a unique ability to distill the Israeli-Palestinian conflct into simple, easy-to-understand terms.  For years, Dr. Halper has been at the forefront of identifying Israel's impasse with respect to peace as well as the steps necessary for Israel to come to terms with its neighbors.  He has elaborated as a key concept the "matrix of control":  a thick web of Israeli settlements, bypass roads, and a
separation wall guaranteed to make the occupation permanent by establishing facts on the ground while at the same time, demolishing
Palestinian homes (since 1967 approximately 18,000 Palestinian homes have demolished) and preventing Palestinians from developing land-use
plans.

In addition to his extensive and incisive writing, (some of which is available at http://www.icahd.org/eng/) Dr. Halper has for years been leading Israelis, Palestinians, and internationals in nonviolent challenges to Israel's occupation, helping to rebuild homes and hopes of Palestinians crushed by Israel's policies of dispossession.  He is also one of 44 activists from 17 nations who in August 2008 successfully challenged Israel's ongoing blockade of Gaza by sailing with two fishing boats from Cyprus to a joyous welcome from 40,000 Gazans.

Anyone interested in a better future for Israelis and Palestinians is likely to come away from Tuesday evening's talk enlightened and inspired.

"What we've done shows that people can do what governments should have done.  If people stand up against injustice, we can truly be the
conscience of the world."  --Jeff Halper.

This event is free and open to the public.  Donations will be accepted to support ICAHD's important work.
