Centoilia Maldonado Vasquez, community leader with the Bi-national Front of Indigenous Organizations (FIOB) in Oaxaca, Mexico, will speak at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 30, at University of Puget Sound's Rausch Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Centoilia Maldonado Vasquez has been a leader in promoting participation in indigenous
community development projects in her home region of Oaxaca, where
recent social uprisings have brought attention to the low levels of
education, health, and infrastructure development in Mexico. She will
address the current state of this conflict,
some of its principal
causes, and share her perspective as an indigenous leader in Oaxaca on the role of US policy in Mexico:
- How have globalization and NAFTA contributed to the root causes of both migration and the current conflict in Oaxaca, Mexico?
- What is happening with the popular uprising and social movement in Oaxaca?
- How has the rise in the level of migration to the north impacted sending communities in Mexico?
- What are the additional challenges faced by indigenous migrants?
