Exit133.com and Local Life Tacoma present “The World’s Foremost Critic of Suburban Sprawl.” "His arguments bring a new lens to urban development, drawing clear connections between physical spaces and cultural vitality.... his magnificent rants are underscored with logic and his books are widely read, particularly by architectural critics and urban planners." TED.com
Kunstler made his mark as an author and critic of suburban sprawl. He wrote The Geography of Nowhere and The End of Suburbia. His most recent book, The Long Emergency, argues that declining oil production eventually will force people to live in sustainable, local communities. He was featured in the films The End of Suburbia and Radiant City.
"The plan so far is to have him take a walk through various area of Tacoma including the Theater District, UWT and Tollefson Plaza so see his reaction and anaysis. Let the cards fall where they may." -- Posted by Erik B. | Feb 20, 09:25 PM
For a preview of the event, look for "James Howard Kunstler: The tragedy of suburbia," a talk he gave at TED: "James Howard Kunstler may be the world’s most outspoken critic of suburban sprawl. He believes the end of the fossil fuels era will soon force a return to smaller-scale, agrarian communities -- and an overhaul of the most destructive features of postwar society.... His arguments bring a new lens to urban development, drawing clear connections between physical spaces and cultural vitality.... His confrontational approach and propensity for doomsday scenarios make Kunstler a lightning rod for controversy and critics. But his magnificent rants are underscored with logic and his books are widely read, particularly by architectural critics and urban planners."
