MICAH Project and America in Solidarity of Tacoma, Washington is declaring October 1, 2008 as NATIONAL 'GUARANTEE YOUR VOTE' DAY to encourage voters to confirm their ability to vote in the upcoming election.

Frustrated by tens of thousands of voters across the country who have had their names purged from voter files, the MICAH Project and AIS initiated this call-to-action that is gaining national attention.  With what many see as a crucial election right around the corner, MICAH and AIS hopes to prevent voters from learning on Election Day that they are not able to vote, when by that time it is too late to re-register.  October 1st was chosen because many states have a 14- or 30- day preregistration requirement.

MICAH and AIS is coordinating with dozens of advocacy groups. churches, blogs and elected officials to call for voters on October 1st to check with their county or state elections officials to make sure that they are STILL registered to vote.

"Let's not allow 2008 to mirror 2000 and 2004, let this election be decided by the people and not machines, dirty tricks or voter witch hunts,"  said Todd Iverson, preside nt of America in Solidarity.  Mike Collier, Chair of the MICAH Project describes the project as, "This is a matter of justice pure and simple, integral voting is fundamental to our nation's well being.  If we lose that we risk anarchy and sinking into being a third world nation."

Just recently:  In Michigan, County Auditors have said that anyone who has had their homes entered into foreclosure will be removed from the voting rolls.  In Wisconsin, the Attorney General has sued the state's elections board to purge 20% of the voters from the rolls.  In Ohio, 600,000 have been threatened with being purged, almost all from three major urban counties.  In New Jersey, 300,000 who thought they were registered, found out that they either hadn't been, or were purged from the files.

What can you do?  Endorse the project, (Prior to October 1st)  spread the word, take part in the action (On October 1st) of emailing, texting or phoning all those who are members/supporters etc in your organization/group.

This project has been endorsed by the Tacoma Branch of the NAACP,  The Velvet Revolution-Washington D.C., Domincan Sisters, GRE Consulting Associates-Whitefish, MT,  First United Methodist Church, Center for Creative Journalism-Columbus, Ohio, St. Leos Social Justice Ministry, Washington State Central Labor Council, Washington Public Campaign, FreePress.com,  United for Peace Pierce County among others.
