NW DETENTION CENTER
IMMIGRATION COURT WATCH PROJECT
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
The Northwest Detention Court Watch Project, sponsored by the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild, is looking for law school students and/or local community activists to participate in the project as court watch volunteers. Volunteers are needed to observe court proceedings in both the immigration court located in downtown Seattle and the detention center located on the Tacoma tide flats.
Volunteers need to be able to commit to watching a minimum of two Master Calendar hearings (each lasting approximately three hours) per month for at least three months and attend at least one evening meeting (lasting approximately two hours) per month for at least three months. Priority will be given to candidates who can make a commitment greater than the minimum requirement.
This project will provide a great service to the NW immigrant advocacy community and to families with loved ones in immigration detention. It will also provide an invaluable experience to Court Watch volunteers who are interested in immigration law and in increasing their understanding of immigration court proceedings.
The next training session is scheduled as follows:
January 12, 2008
1:00 – 4:30 p.m.
University of Washington – Tacoma Campus
Room GWP 101 (Main Building across from Regis/Financial Aid)
