—July 2008—

Safe Streets neighborhood groups in Tacoma are joining forces for a March Against Crime along Pacific Avenue on Saturday, July 26.  Participants plan to meet at 5:00 p.m. to make signs at Anahuac Mexican Restaurant - 9002 Pacific Ave. - and will begin marching at 6:00 p.m. along a planned route from 96th to 72nd.  Organized by the Larchmont Safe Streets Block Group, the demonstration will include members from the Lincoln LAWG, Fern Hill Park Alliance Safe Streets, and Upper Pacific Avenue groups, and will focus on ongoing problems with drugs, gangs and prostitution.

“We chose to invite other groups to march with us because we wanted to get more people involved,” says Larchmont co-leader Kathy Martin.  “There is strength in numbers, and most of the groups are facing similar problems in their neighborhoods,” adds co-leader Marion Bass.

The Larchmont group’s improvement efforts, which have ranged from sponsoring safety fairs to painting over graffiti, are resulting in lower levels of crime in their neighborhood.  However, members cite the need to maintain public awareness of illegal activity in Tacoma.  “We are hoping to clean up our neighborhood and our city,” says Martin.

Safe Streets Campaign is the first private, non-profit organization that unites neighbors against crime—a model for other programs nationwide. Serving Tacoma and Pierce County since 1989, Safe Streets equal a safe community. Both private and public funds support Safe Streets’ community efforts.  Learn more at www.safest.org.
